Soca music is quintessentially Trinidadian – an eclectic, syncretic genre, with deep roots in the calypso it evolved from. With flavours of funk, soul, African, Latin, Indian, and more recently, electronic dance music, soca can be both bacchanalian and conscious, sometimes at the same time.

Soca or soul calypso is a form of dance music which originated in the Islands of Trinidad and Tobago from calypso music. It originally combined the melodic lilting sound of calypso with insistent percussion (which is often electronic in recent music) and local chutney music.

Soca/Calypso. Showing 1–12 of 31 results. The Rhythm of Calypso Comp. by Phil Solomon Get down to the basics of the calypso style with this easy-play arrangement. Another catchy soca from one of Trinidad's most gifted steelband composers.

Oct 15,  · Soca is a form of calypso and both deserve to be invested in as the Caribbean progresses and shares its culture with the world. With technological advances, the music is now more accessible to a larger audience. Just as non-nationals fall in love with soca, people are falling in love with calypso of days gone-by all over again.

Super Blue is a time Road March winner, and Lyons-Alvarez is also a record-breaker as the only woman to win both the Power and Groovy Soca monarch titles of the International Soca Monarch competition. She also only the third woman to win the Road March after Calypso .

Soca, Trinidadian popular music that developed in the s and is closely related to calypso. Used for dancing at Carnival and at fetes, soca emphasizes rhythmic energy and studio production—including synthesized sounds and electronically mixed ensemble effects—over storytelling, a quality more.

Nothing against Calypso and Soca- these are both dynamic and expressive genres. But this compilation reflects the modern trend towards downsized horn sections replaced by synthesizers. The problem with synthesized horn sections- and I think this is beyond just a matter of taste- is that the authenticity of the sound is limited by the current /5(5).
