Jackie McLean’s ‘Bluesnik’ is considered one of the alto saxophonist’s most accessible albums, though ‘Capuchin Swing’ and ‘Swing Swang Swingin’ would not be far behind. It was recorded on 8th January and released in February

Although Bluesnik is primarily an album featuring the two horns, on several of the tunes Drew is afforded space to contribute soulful and musically stirring solo passages. These tunes include McLean's Goin' Way Blues, Kenny Drew's Drew's Blues and Torchin', and also Freddie Hubbard's Blues Function/5(25).

A modernist classic from 60s Blue Note! The album's one of Jackie McLean 's greatest from the time – and one of his seminal "new thing" sessions cut with young modernists Grachan Moncur III on trombone and Bobby Hutcherson on vibes – both young players who were really finding the sharper edges of their sound at the time! Three of the four long tracks on the record were written by Moncur.

A rare electric outing from legendary altoist Jackie McLean – and one that comes off surprisingly well, given that the move was quite a shift for the reedman! The album's got a spiritual current that McLean developed in some of his earlier 70s material – like his gems for the Steeplechase label – but also mixes in some funky fusion elements too, in a blend that almost puts Jackie in the.
